API traces its beginning to World War I, when Congress and the domestic oil and natural gas industry worked together to help the war effort. It Objective was to ensure that vital petroleum supplies were rapidly and efficiently deployed to the armed forces. Thus API established on March 20, 1919 with the Oil & gas companies.

Requirements
The API Specification Q1 Standard – 9 th Edition consists of 6 Clauses and an Annexure A. The Standard has a total of 99 Sub clauses. The total number of Mandatory Procedures as required by the Standard is 30 and the number of Mandatory records is 36.
It is required to develop and maintain a Quality Manual that describes their quality management system and how it conforms to the requirements of API Spec Q1.

- Submit a signed API Licensing Agreement & quality management system application
- Submit quality manuals and supporting documents in compliance with API Spec Q1
- Operate under their documented quality management system for 4 months prior to receiving an API audit
- Companies must perform a documented internal audit and management review prior to submitting the application to API
- Perform and document an internal audit

- API will schedule an on-site audit
